Young Americans Chasing the American Dream of Homeownership are Out of Luck
MONDAY, MAY 16, 2022
Young Americans chasing the American dream of homeownership are more likely to find it in the oilfields than anywhere else, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2016-20 American Community Survey data. Five of the 10 U.S. counties with more than 10,000 housing units and the highest rates of homeownership for 25- to 34-year-olds are in the North Dakota, Wyoming, or Texas oilfields.
That’s the good news; the bad news is that 25- to 34-year-olds make up less than 20 percent of homeowners in every U.S. county. In Williams County, N.D., 19.2 percent of owner-occupied homes are owned by young Americans, the highest rate in the nation. It’s trailed by Montgomery County, Tenn. (18.6 percent), on the southwest Kentucky border, and Hoke County, N.C. (18.6 percent), which includes part of the massive Fort Bragg military base.
Use Social Explorer’s easy to use mapping and report tools to look at homeownership rates among young people in your county.
