Where in the U.S. do Monthly Electricity Bills Top $250?
WEDNESDAY, NOV 16, 2022
U.S. natural gas producers are seeking big profits from exporting natural gas to Europe and Asia, as natural gas from Russia becomes scarce in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine. That’s bad news for electricity customers, whose power is generally supplied by natural gas-fired plants. A Social Explorer analysis of 2021 American Community Survey data, however, finds most of the pain is likely to be concentrated in the Deep South.
The Albany, Ga., metro area had some of the most expensive electricity in the U.S. in 2021, with 41.9 percent of customers paying more than $250 per month for power. It was followed by Wilson, N.C. (36.8 percent); Alexandria, La. (35 percent); Cullman, Ala. (33.4 percent); and Redding, Calif. (32.3 percent), the only metro in the top 10 located outside the Deep South.
