More than 1 in 25 Americans identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. But where have they all gone? According to a Social Explorer analysis of 2014-18 American Community Survey data, there were 410,000 same-sex unmarried couples in the U.S., a decline from the 690,000 same-sex unmarried couples found by the 2005-09 American Community Survey. The disparity should be clear later this year when the Census Bureau begins releasing ACS data on same-sex married couples; a University of California study found that more than 1 million LGBTQ couples have tied the knot since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages with the June 2015 Obergefell decision.
