The U.S. Asian Population – The Fastest-Growing Median Household Income and Racial Group

TUESDAY, APR 19, 2022

It’s not just the Asian population that’s one of the fastest-growing racial groups in the U.S. – it’s their median household income, as well. A Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2016-20 American Community Survey data finds the median income for Asian households has grown 11.9 percent over the last decade to $91,775, faster and higher than any other race in the country. The household income for the typical Asian household rose by three digits in Brazos County, Texas (+122.8 percent to $49,107) and Falls Church City, Va. (+105.6 percent to $135,536) between 2010 and 2020.

The typical Asian household reported a six-figure income in 64 U.S. counties where Asian-Americans made up 5 percent or more of the population. Asian household incomes were highest in Loudoun County, Va. ($170,117); Somerset County, N.J. ($165,474); and Mercer County, N.J. ($160,465) – far more than the typical U.S. household, which reported $64,994 in income, a 5.2 percent increase over the decade.
