The Ratio of Men to Women Across the United States

FRIDAY, FEB 11, 2022

It's a well-understood demographic phenomenon that the places with the highest ratios of men to women are typically homes to large prison facilities, such as Susanville, Calif., or Beeville, Texas. But the places where women outnumber men by a large margin? Try looking in the Deep South, where 9 of the 10 metropolitan or micropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with the largest disparity between the male and female population are located.

A Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data finds there are 1.17 women for every man in the Selma, Ala., MSA, which has a total population of 31,149. Mexico, Mo., the only non-Deep South MSA in the top 10, ranked second (1.17), followed by Clarksdale, Miss. (1.16). Use Social Explorer’s award-winning, customizable report generation and mapping tools to look at gender balances in your part of the world.
