Social Explorer Case Study: Ypsilanti District Library

WEDNESDAY, JUN 08, 2022

Problem:

The Ypsilanti District Library wanted to examine usage patterns, age, sex and other demographics of the library for planning and development. The library sought to ensure it was achieving equity, diversity and inclusion targets for the community, and identified at-risk segments of the population based on economic, education, health, age, race, and family structures.

Solution:

Augmented by data from the Ypsilanti Public Library’s records of library checkouts, Social Explorer created demographic profiles of the neighborhoods served by three branches of the library. Social Explorer used 2015-19 American Community Survey data to compare the library patron demographics to state and national numbers, and create a benchmark for the district.

Outcome:

The Social Explorer analysis, part of a 24-page report that included maps, charts and tables, helped the library to better plan for its future and serve its patrons, as well as documenting its role in the life of the city.
