Single-Family Detached Homes in the United States

MONDAY, MAY 16, 2022

The surprising thing isn’t that New York County, N.Y. – the island of Manhattan – has the smallest percentage of single-family detached homes in the United States. The surprising thing is that there are so many. Slightly more than 10,000 housing units in Manhattan are single-family, detached homes — approximately 1 percent of the borough’s entire housing stock, according to a Social Explorer review of 2016-20 American Community Survey.

Less surprisingly, it’s trailed by Kings County, N.Y. (Brooklyn, 5.1 percent single-family detached); Bronx County, N.Y. (6.2 percent); Philadelphia County, Penn. (8.1 percent); and neighboring Hudson County, N.J. (9.6 percent). The five counties are the only ones in the U.S. where the percentage of single-family detached homes are in the single digits.

Look at the percentage of single-family detached homes – the most common type of housing unit in the United States – with Social Explorer’s unique, easy-to-use mapping and report tools.
