Same-Sex Marriage Surges Ahead: American Community Survey Data Shows 25% Increase in LGBTQ+ Married Couples in Two Years

SATURDAY, MAR 11, 2023

An increasing number of same-sex couples will be able to take advantage of protections under the new Respect for Marriage Act signed in mid-December by President Biden, according to a Social Explorer analysis of American Community Survey data. Between 2019 and 2021, the number of same-sex married couples increased by 25.2 percent, almost 8 times more than the increase in opposite-sex marriages.

Marriages with male spouses increased 27.3 percent during the two-year period; marriages with female spouses jumped 23.3 percent. Meanwhile, opposite-sex marriages climbed only 3.4 percent – although they still make up 98.8 percent of all married couples.
