Renting Prices Across the United States

THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2022

Rents have most certainly risen since the results of the 2020 American Community Survey were released earlier this year, but the trends likely have remained the same. Nine of the counties with the nation’s highest rents – and four of the five most expensive– were located in the San Francisco Bay area, according to a Social Explorer analysis of the 2016-20 data. The Washington suburb of Falls Church, where the average rent was $2,044, was the only non-California county among the five most expensive counties.

Nationwide, the most expensive rents were found in San Mateo County, Calif. ($2,435); Santa Clara, Calif. ($2,386); Marin, Calif. ($2,170); and San Francisco, Calif. ($2,010). Six Virginia and Maryland counties – all within hailing distance of Washington, D.C. – were among the top 20. New York had three of the most expensive rents in the nation, including New York County ($1,695), which barely trailed Long Island’s Nassau County ($1,708) and Suffolk County ($1,810).
