Median Black Household Income, 2019

Black Americans, who make up roughly 12.5 percent of the nation’s population, earn more than the median household income in only 73 of 999 U.S. metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data.

The 10 MSAs where Black households earn more than the median amount for the metro or micro area are all west of the Mississippi River, led by Las Vegas, N.M. ($100,896, or 329 percent more than the MSA median); Aberdeen, Wash. ($126,369, or 246.6 percent); and Eagle Pass, Texas ($96,071, or 242.5 percent). Among the nation’s 25 wealthiest metros, Black households made more than the median in only three – Juneau, Alaska ($118,214, or 133.7 percent); Edwards, Colo. ($133,614, or $157.6 percent); and Allentown, Penn. ($85,750, or 105.5 percent).
