In the Last Two Decades, Almost 100,000 Afghans Have Immigrated to the U.S. Where Have They Settled?

THURSDAY, JUL 21, 2022

In the last two decades, almost 100,000 Afghans have immigrated to the U.S. Where have they settled? If history is any guide and Afghan-Americans provide any clues, they’ve put down roots in some likely places (the Washington, D.C., suburbs) and unlikely places (southwest Virginia coal country), according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2016-20 American Community Survey data.

Slightly more than 1 percent of the 13,700 Americans who claim partial Afghan ancestry live in Wise County, Va., on the Kentucky border – more than twice the percentage living in No. 2 Taos County, N.M. They’re followed by three Virginia counties: Alexandria City (0.4 percent), Suffolk City (0.4 percent), and Fairfax County (0.3 percent). Sacramento County, Calif., has the most Afghan-Americans, reporting 1,033 people with Afghan ancestry.
