Half of the 10 counties with the most housing units are more affordable than the national average for young American homeowners, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2016-20 American Community Survey data.
About 9.3 percent of owner-occupied homes in the U.S. belong to people between the ages of 25 and 34. In Los Angeles County, which has more housing units than any U.S. county, only 6.4 percent of owner-occupied homes belong to people between 25 and 34 years old. Cook County, Ill., the second-largest market, reported a 9.3 percent rate; Harris County, Texas (10.8 percent), and Maricopa County, Ariz. (10.2 percent), had the highest percentages among the 10 largest housing markets.
