Gender Pay Gap in Sports

FRIDAY, JUL 30, 2021

The start of another cycle of Olympic games that brings focus to traditionally ignored women’s sports overshadows a reality of modern economics: Women typically earn 81 cents for every $1 made by men, and despite progress, female athletes aren’t much better off. A Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data finds the typical full-time woman athlete earns $42,491 annually, or about 86 cents for every $1 earned by a full-time male athlete.

The disparity isn’t any better for women who manage and train athletes. They make about $53,400 annually, or 83 percent of the typical male athletic trainer who brings in $64,250. Check out the disparity for 565 detailed occupations with Social Explorer’s customizable, easy-to-use reporting tool.
