Foreign-born Population in the US Continues to Grow Despite Pandemic: Surprising Metro Areas See Steepest Increases

The number of foreign-born residents in the United States swelled even during the midst of a global pandemic, climbing by more than 337,200 people between 2019 and 2021, according to a Social Explorer analysis of American Community Survey data. More than 28 percent of the nation’s 45.3 million foreign-born population has arrived since 2010, surpassing the 27.8 percent who have been in the U.S. since 1990 or before.
The steepest increases in the recently arrived foreign-born population have occurred in some unexpected metro areas. Almost 62 percent of the foreign-born population in Lafayette, La., has arrived since 2010; it was followed by St. Cloud, Minn. (60.9 percent) and Morgantown, W.Va. (59.1 percent).
