Food Stamp Beneficiaries Across the United States

SUNDAY, MAR 06, 2022

Politicians from the Deep South represent some of the poorest congressional districts in the nation. But when it comes to the percentage of households having trouble putting food on the table when inflation is sending prices soaring, a Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data finds inner city residents in the urban North are more likely to receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or food stamp) benefits than any other districts in the nation.

Almost half of all households (46 percent) in New York’s 15th Congressional District, which includes parts of the South Bronx in New York City, receive SNAP funds; it also has the lowest median household income in the nation. It’s followed by Michigan’s 13th Congressional District (30.9 percent), which includes much of Detroit, and New York’s 13th Congressional District, which also includes parts of the Bronx and upper Manhattan.

Explore the percentage of food-insecure households in the nation’s 538 congressional districts using Social Explorer’s intuitive, customizable report generation and mapping tools.
