Evictions Stands to Hit an Unlikely Demographic Cohort Hardest

THURSDAY, AUG 13, 2020

A potential wave of evictions prompted by the global coronavirus pandemic stands to hit an unlikely demographic cohort hardest: People between the ages of 40 and 54, according to the Census Bureau’s July 9-14 Household Pulse Survey.  More than 1 in 4 of the 16.8 million renters in the age group either skipped or deferred rent payments during the previous month, according to a Social Explorer analysis.

More than 7.2 million Americans between the ages of 45 and 54 rent their homes, according to the 2014-18 American Community Survey. The cohort makes up more than a quarter of the total population in 211 neighborhoods, including tracts located in major markets such as Honolulu (49 percent of all households), Brooklyn (37.3 percent), and Miami (33.7 percent).

Examine the percentage of this economically at-risk population with Social Explorer’s award-winning online tools.
