Children Living with Single Parents, 2019

FRIDAY, MAR 11, 2022

All children in more than 350 U.S. neighborhoods live with a single parent, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data. The neighborhoods, defined as Census tracts, are predominantly urban, poor and heavily minority. In one Atlanta tract, for example, all 1,67 children live with single parents.  In a Memphis, Tenn., neighborhood, 1,782 kids are from broken homes, and another 1,352 East St. Louis, Ill., children live with only one parent.

All told, almost 87,600 children live in neighborhoods where no one is growing up with two parents. On the bright side, almost 725 neighborhoods report all children are living with two parents – a total of approximately 223,350 kids.
