American Dream of Homeownership Out of Reach for a Growing Number of Americans

MONDAY, NOV 14, 2022

Soaring housing prices, spiraling inflation, and rising interest rates are putting the American dream of homeownership even more out of reach for a growing number of Americans. Yet there are still at least a baker’s dozen of micropolitan and metropolitan statistical areas with homeownership rates that top 80 percent of households, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2021 American Community Survey data.

The Villages, Fla., a fast-growing central Florida metro, boasts the nation’s largest share of homeowners at 89.1 percent. It’s followed by Holland, Mich. (88 percent); Homosassa Springs, Fla. (84 percent); Marinette, Wis. (83.2 percent); and Punta Gorda, Fla. (82.7 percent). All except Holland have a population with a median age greater than the U.S. median of 38.8.
