Social Explorer’s Andrew Beveridge on Bronx Population Growth in the NY Times

nyt_logo_sq600The latest Census Bureau figures from the 2015 American Community Survey show record population numbers in New York City. In theNew York Times article "People Fled the Bronx in the 1970s. Now Its Population Is Booming," Sam Roberts explores the change borough by borough, citing data and analysis from Social Explorer and Andrew Beveridge. The borough has rebounded from years of high crime and arson, and residential development is on the rise. Once, the Bronx was burning, now, as Roberts writes "The Bronx is surging."

…An influx of immigrants helped boost the borough’s population to 1.455 million as of July 1, 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau. At the annual rate the Bronx has been growing since 2010, about 1 percent, the highest of any county in the state, that would place the current total ahead of the high of 1.472 million in 1970, demographers agree…

Prof. Andrew A. Beveridge, a Queens College demographer, said, “The continued population growth of the outer boroughs of New York City, typical of Brooklyn and to some extent Queens, now seems to be spreading to parts of the Bronx, as they reach their record population.”

Roberts notes other New York demographic trends including the foreign-born population in Queens (48 percent of the population), making it the second most immigrant-populated county behind Miami-Dade.
