The CDC Cancer 2013 data presented on Social Explorer originates from two main sources:

1. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
2. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

The CDC is a federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services with the main goal to protect public health and safety through the control and prevention of disease, injury, and disability. The CDC works on protecting the citizens of the United States of America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the United States. Whether diseases start in the U.S or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, the CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. Also, the CDC increases the health security, saves lives and protects people from health threats. To accomplish their mission, the CDC conducts critical science and provides health information that with aim to protect citizens of the United States of America against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise.

The CMS is previously known as the Health Care Financing Administration, is a federal agency within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that administers the Medicare program and works in partnership with state governments to administer Medicaid, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and health insurance portability standards. In addition to these programs, the CMS has other responsibilities, including the administrative simplification standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), quality standards in long-term care facilities (more commonly referred to as nursing homes) through its survey and certification process, clinical laboratory quality standards under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and oversight of HealthCare.gov.
