This report presents statistics from the 1960 Census of Population on characteristics of persons lit years old and over by age at first marriage. Among the characteristics shown are: age at census, year of first marriage, marital status, whether married more than once, sex, race or color, Nativity and Parentage, country of origin, education, occupation, and Income In 1959. Statistics by age at first marriage are shown also for white Persons of Spanish Surname, for Puerto Ricans, and for married couples without own household. In addition, this report presents average annual rates of first marriage per 1,000 single persons 14 to 44 years old in 1958 and 1959, by education, occupation, Income In 1959, age, color, and sex.
Most of the statistics are shown for the United States, urbanized areas, and the South. In addition, several tables present data by detailed type of residence and by regions. Rates of first marriage by age are shown by states.

Statistics on age at first marriage for women 35 to 54 years old, by number of children ever born, marital status, color, and age at census, for the United States, its urban and rural parts, and for the South are shown in 1960 Census of Population, Pinal Report PC(2)-3A, women by number of children ever born. That report also shows data on year of first marriage, by age at first marriage, and color, for ever-married women 1.5 years old and over, for the United States, urbanized areas, and the South. Statistics on age at first marriage and year of first marriage of heads of husband-wife families, by selected characteristics of the family head, for the United States, urban and rural, and for regions, are shown in Pinal Report PC(2)-4A, Families. All of these statistics are based on a 5-percent sample.
Statistics on the social and economic characteristics of women 15 to 59 years old, who had been married, separated, divorced or widowed for specified, periods of time before the date of enumeration, and statistics on the age at which women entered their current marital status, were shown in 1950 Census of Population, Volume IV, Part 2, chapter E, Duration of Current Marital Status. Statistics on duration of marriage for women 15 to 49 years old married once with husband present, by number of children ever born, and color, were shown in 1950 Census of Population, Volume IV, Part 5, chapter C, Fertility.
Statistics on duration of first marriage and age at first marriage for 1940, and on duration of first marriage for 1910 were published in reports of the 1940 Census which appear under the General title Differential Fertility-1940 and 1910.
Data on age at first marriage based on the Current Population Survey are occasionally published in Current Population Reports, Series P-20, Data on age at first marriage for ever- married women in the civilian noninstitutional population were shown by year of first, marriage, age, color, and marital status, in Series P-20, No. 108, "Marriage, Fertility, and Childspacing: August 1959." Additional statistics on age at first marriage for earlier years were presented in Series P-20, No. 21, 23, 50, and 67.
The data shown in the present, report represent the full detail printed out by the computer system. The detail shown for the United States was tabulated separately for each State and was stored on magnetic tape but not printed out. Requests for unpublished data, giving a specific description, of the figures desired, may be made by writing to the Chief, Population Division, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C., 20233. Inquiries concerning unpublished data should be "transmitted to the Bureau as soon as possible because tape files are not maintained indefinitely.
