The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) is a project of the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota. The NHGIS project made historical GIS possible by digitizing maps of United States back to the first census in 1790. Social Explorer worked closely with the NHGIS for many years to digitize some of the historical data for various cities around the country.
