General Notes

The County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHRR) program is a collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. The CHRR program provides vital health factors, including high school graduation rates, obesity, smoking, unemployment, access to healthy foods, the quality of air and water, income, and teen births in nearly every county in America.

The goals of the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHRR) program are to:

  1. Build awareness of the multiple factors that influence health
  2. Provide a reliable, sustainable source of local data to communities to help them identify opportunities to improve their health
  3. Engage and activate local leaders from many sectors in creating sustainable community change
  4. Connect & empower community leaders working to improve health.

All of the data we used can be downloaded from the CHRR website. Provided data files contain the measure value, numerator, denominator and confidence intervals, where available, for all CHRR measures, both the measures that are ranked as well as the additional measures, for each county in the nation. Codebooks and documentation that provide the name of each variable, its data source and the years of data are also available.
