Work from Home Before the Global Pandemic

WEDNESDAY, DEC 30, 2020

It’s not much of a spoiler to say this number is going to be much higher next year. In 2019 – also known as Before Times, for a workforce that spent much of 2020 adapting to a global pandemic – barely 5 percent of people older than 16 worked at home, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2015-19 American Community Survey data.

The highest percentage of people working at home were found in rural counties on the Great Plains, such as Harding County, S.D. (34.1 percent), Loup County, Neb. (34 percent), and Petroleum County, Mont. (32.1 percent). Check out the percentage of people who worked at home in Before Times with Social Explorer’s award-winning, customizable mapping tools.
