U.S. Foreign Born Residents

THURSDAY, JUL 23, 2020

The West Coast and Sunbelt may be increasingly attractive beacons for immigrants, but the New York region remains the primary gateway for foreign-born people living in the U.S., according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2014-18 American Community Survey data. Although Los Angeles, Miami, and Houston had more foreign-born arrivals after 2010 than any individual New York county, the tri-state counties took in roughly 1 of every 8 immigrants who arrived from other countries during the last decade.

One-third of the 7.9 million foreign-born people who arrived in the U.S. after 2010 settled in 10 metros: Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Phoenix, and Boston.

Check out the percentage of foreign-born residents who arrived in your county after 2010 with Social Explorer’s online mapping tools.
