The Greatest Generation Continues to Shrink: The Veteran Population Across the U.S.

MONDAY, NOV 15, 2021

The Greatest Generation continues to shrink. The number of U.S. veterans who served in World War II continues to fall, dropping to a little more than 600,000 in 2019. At the start of the decade, there were more than 2.6 million WWII veterans, according to a Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2015-19 American Community Survey data.

The highest percentage of WWII veterans are found in small counties across the Midwest and Great Plains. In McPherson County, Neb., 38.7 percent of veterans served in World War II. High percentages are also found in Cheyenne County, Kan. (23.4 percent); La Salle County, Texas (23.2 percent); and Custer County, Idaho (22.8 percent). Use Social Explorer’s award-winning, online tools to see the percentage of WWII veterans in your county.
