Southern California Sees Surge in COVID-19 Cases

WEDNESDAY, JAN 20, 2021

While winter was feared for its potential to spread the deadly coronavirus, its worst effects have been felt so far in an unlikely place where cool weather is infrequent – southern California. Seven counties in the region (Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Imperial) registered more than 835,100 confirmed cases between Dec. 20 and Jan. 19, according to a Social Explorer analysis. The southern California cases would populate the entire city of Seattle, with enough left over for West Palm Beach, Fla.

Los Angeles County alone has accounted for 408,000 cases over the last month; Riverside (103,700), Orange (100,500), San Bernardino (96,200), and San Diego (90,400) all rank in the top 10 for the total number of infections reported. New York, home to the nation’s largest city,  had the second-most infections of any county, with 158,000. Almost 8 percent of Los Angeles County’s population has now been infected. Use Social Explorer’s customizable, easy-to-use mapping tools to see how many COVID-19 cases have been reported in your county over the last month.
