Social Distancing Weighs Heavily in Areas with Large Housing Units

TUESDAY, JUN 02, 2020

There are few places where social distancing has weighed as heavily upon Americans as the large apartment buildings — containing at least 50 units — that make up slightly more than 5 percent of U.S. housing. Not coincidentally, they're located in counties with some of the highest infection rates in the nation, including New York County, where 55.9 percent of all housing contains 50 or more units; Arlington County, Va. (41.5 percent); and Bronx County, N.Y. (36 percent).

See how many large housing units — those with 50 homes or more — are in your county and how they compare with COVID-19 cases with Social Explorer's interactive mapping tools.
