The percentage of same-sex married couples, who make up about 0.5 percent of all married households, grew almost 10 percent between 2019 and 2020, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2015-19 and 2016-20 American Community Survey data. About 571,000 of the nation’s 58.8 million married couples were reported as same-sex unions, an increase of 46,000 from the previous survey.

The nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., is also the nation’s capital of same-sex married couples; slightly more than 6 percent of married couples are in same-sex unions. The capital is followed by Vermont, where 1.6 percent of married couples are the same sex. Vermont was the first state to legalize same-sex civil unions in 2000.  Delaware ranked third, with 1.6 percent of married couples being same-sex households, followed by Massachusetts (1.5 percent) and Washington (1.3 percent).
