New Levels of Detail: Zip Codes, School Districts, Metros and Congressional Districts

WEDNESDAY, AUG 05, 2015

Social Explorer users can already visualize map data by state, county, place, tract and (where available) block group levels. Now, users can explore data by ZCTA5 (zip codes), School Districts (UNSD, SCSD, ELSD), Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMA) and Congressional Districts.

Add more context to you maps and presentations with our new geographic layers.

To customize any map view, start by clicking on "Show data by."

The geography display automatically adjusts based on your zoom level.  Turn the Automatic off to customize the view manually.

A little more about these geographies:

  • ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas.
  • Public Use Microdata Areas are Census Bureau sample tabulation areas containing at least 100,000 people.
  • School Districts come in three layers: Unified School District (UNSD); Secondary School District (SCSD); and Elementary School District.
  • Metropolitan Statistical Areas contain core urban areas of 50,000 people or more.  They consist or one or more counties in the core area as well as any adjacent counties that have a high degree of social and economic integration with the urban core. (For example, the New York City metro contains parts of New Jersey as well.)

Visit Social Explorer's maps here.  These geographies and many more are also available in Social Explorer's tables.  (Please note that because of data availability, not all geography layers are available for every variable or every year.)
