MONDAY, FEB 15, 2021

If you’re thinking of the most expensive county for rental housing in the U.S., you’d probably think of New York. Think again. A Social Explorer analysis of newly released 2015-19 American Community Survey data shows none of the counties that include or surround New York City were among the 10 priciest places for housing rentals.

Instead, all 10 were located either in the San Francisco Bay area or northern Virginia suburbs near Washington, D.C. San Mateo County, Calif., was estimated to be the most expensive, with a median gross rent of $2,316, followed by Santa Clara County ($2,268) and Marin County ($2,069). Check out the typical rent in your county with Social Explorer’s customizable online tools.
