A shortage of new construction is being partially blamed for a nationwide affordable housing crisis, especially in East and West Coast metros. But a TractIQ analysis of 2015-19 American Community Survey data finds that the three metro areas with the smallest percentage of homes built since 2014 are in the middle of the country – all in Illinois.
