Housing Units Without a Mortgage, 2020

MONDAY, JUN 13, 2022

It’s one of the biggest parts of the American Dream: Not just owning your own home, but having a paid-off mortgage. It’s a reality for a surprisingly large percentage of homeowners. A Social Explorer analysis of 2016-20 American Community Survey data finds almost 38 percent of homeowners aren’t having to make monthly mortgage payments.

The locations of the most mortgage-free homes are also surprising. Among counties with more than 10,000 housing units, the most mortgage-free areas occur in the Southwest and Appalachia. Apache County, Ariz., has the highest percentage of mortgage-free homes at 81.1 percent. It’s followed by Starr County, Texas (80 percent), and McKinley County, N.M. (75.8 percent).

Use Social Explorer’s award-winning report and mapping tools to check out the places in your region with the biggest number of mortgage-free homes.
