Groceries seldom have been cheap, and inflation is taking a large bite from the budgets of some of the nation’s poorest places, according to a Social Explorer analysis of 2021 American Community Survey data. In Rio Grande City, Texas, 50.2 percent of households are getting federal help putting food on the table with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly known as food stamps).

Rio Grande City was followed by Gallup, N.M. (40.6 percent), Lumberton, N.C. (33.7 percent); Roanoke Rapids, N.C. (31.1 percent); and McAllen, Texas (30.9 percent). The five metropolitan or micropolitan statistical areas with the lowest rates of food stamp participants are all west of the Mississippi River: Heber, Utah (1.5 percent); Bozeman, Mont. (2.5 percent); Provo, Utah (4.4 percent); Logan, Utah (4.6 percent); and Coeur d’Alene (4.8 percent).
