County Business Patterns Data and Maps Now Available

TUESDAY, OCT 25, 2016

Dive into detailed industry data with the 2014 County Business Patterns (CBP), now available in Social Explorer's maps and reports. The Census Bureau developed the CBP as an annual series to provide economic data by industry. These data include the number of establishments, employment, first quarter payroll, and annual payroll.

Users can map different sizes and kinds of businesses. For example, this map shows biggest businesses (over 1,000 employees) compared to smallest (one to four employees). Zoom in for more detail.

Looking to the detailed reports, the data reveal that Health Care and Social Assistance establishments employ the most people, with 18,861,973 employees, making up 15.6 percent of the total workforce, followed by retail trade (12.7 percent) and Accommodation and Food Services (10.6 percent). Health Care and Social Assistance also makes up the largest annual payroll, followed by Professional/Scientific/Technical Services, and then Manufacturing.

Users can also compare business data and demographic data with Social Explorer. For example, the left map shows where Professional/Scientific/Technical Services establishments are, and the right map shows the distribution of higher income households. Zoom in for more detail, and try out other demographic variables.

Get started with the business data today, and explore it alongside our library of demographic and other data.
