More than 14 million people  – roughly 1 in every 23 Americans – are employed by the food services and accommodation industries, according to a Social Explorer review of the latest Census data. According to the bureau’s 2017 County Business Patterns survey, more than 456,000 work in Los Angeles County alone. Clark County, Nev., was No. 2 (268,009), followed by Cook County, Ill. (253,616), New York County, N.Y. (252,017), and Harris County, Texas (208,211).

The five counties account for more than 10 percent of the national employment total.
