Change in Unemployment, December 2019-2020

WEDNESDAY, AUG 18, 2021

The degree to which the COVID-19 wrought havoc on the nation’s economy will be studied for years, but a TractIQ analysis of federal data finds employment had failed to recover in 3 of every 4 U.S. counties by the end of 2020. More than 2,400 of the nation’s 3,141 counties saw rising unemployment between February and December 2020.

The hardest-hit counties were largely either dependent on service-, energy- or tourism-related industries. Bronx County, N.Y., saw its unemployment rate rise to 15.1 percent in December 2020, up from the pre-pandemic rate of 4.6 percent. Other counties that suffered extreme rises in unemployment included Maui, Hawaii (up 10.3 percent); Carroll, Mo. (plus 9.7 percent); and Kauai County, Hawaii (up 9.5 percent). Examine the change in unemployment rates in your county with TractIQ’s customizable online mapping tools.
