TUESDAY, APR 07, 2015

Webby_H_BWSocial Explorer is delighted to announce that our collaboration with the Census Bureau, Census Explorer: Young Adults Then and Now, has been honored for Best Government Website in the 19th Annual Webby Awards.

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. IADAS, which nominates and selects The Webby Award Winners, is comprised of web industry experts, including Tumblr founder, David Karp, Grantland’s Bill Simmons, Lucky Magazine’s Editor-in-chief, Eva Chen, Instagram co-founder, Kevin Systrom, mobile phone inventor Martin Cooper, and and creator of the .gif file format, Steve Wilhite.

“Honorees like Census Explorer are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 13,000 entries we received this year.”

Last year, Social Explorer was a Webby Award Honoree for Best Education website for our redesigned site. This latest award recognizes our latest data and map design. We want to thank our team and all of our collaborators at the Census Bureau for their work on this exciting project.

About Census Explorer:

Social Explorer and the Census Bureau created Census Explorer to engage the public with census data through fun, interactive visualizations. Census Explorer Young Adults: Then and Now examines the socioeconomic characteristics of 18- to 34-year-olds across time, from Baby Boomers to Millennials. Users can compare the different generations by gender, education, median income, and more. Other editions of Census Explorer showcase population estimates, retail data, commuting time and methods, and more. Visit them all here.

About Social Explorer:

Social Explorer (www.SocialExplorer.com) is an online research tool designed to provide quick and easy access to current and historical census data and demographic information.  Social Explorer was first conceived of in 1999 to break down the barriers to demographic visualization and large-scale data analysis. With support from the National Science Foundation and The New York Times, the Social Explorer team developed a sophisticated data system and a simple online interface to give users access to comprehensive demographic data and interactive tools.

The site first launched to the public in 2003 and became available by subscription in 2007 through our distributor Oxford University Press, as well as through partnerships with Pearson Publishers and the Census Bureau.

This Webby Award recognizes Social Explorer's collaboration with the Census Bureau on this special edition of Census Explorer: Young Adults Then and Now.  Other honors include the 2013 Webby Award Honor for Best Education website, the Gold Medal in the 2015 Modern Library Awards, the 2010 Outstanding Reference Source Award from the Reference and User Services Association (a division of the American Library Association), and the 2012 Standard of Excellence Award from the Web Marketing Association.
