Amidst a Global Pandemic, more Americans are Working from Home

FRIDAY, MAR 13, 2020

A Social Explorer analysis of 2014-18 American Community Survey shows 4.2 million Americans worked from home. That’s a significant numerical increase from 2010, when 2.9 million U.S. workers had an easy trip to work. But even with an additional 1.3 million people working from home, the latest results show only a slight nudge for the workforce. The 2.9 million U.S. workers whose office was at home represented 2.1 percent of the total workforce in 2010; the 4.2 million Americans at home made up only 2.7 percent of the workforce in 2018.

Others aren’t as lucky as almost 5,100 Census tracts with 1,000 or more workers older than 16, however, reported no one working from home.

Use Social Explorer to figure out how much of a shift it will be for your neighbors to work from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
