Chapter Contents
This report presents statistics primarily on persons by characteristics of the households and families of which they are members. Most of these statistics are based on a 5-percent sample of households or a 5-percent sample of persons not in households. Some of the data pertaining to housing characteristics are based on a 4-percent or a 1-percent sample, however. The data are presented for all the characteristics for the Nation as a whole, and for most of the characteristics for urban and rural areas and the South. Also, in most tables, the detail for urban areas includes national totals for persons in urbanized areas and other urban areas, and the detail for rural areas includes national totals for persons on farms and persons not on farms.
This report features data on persons by the composition and the social, economic, and housing characteristics of the families of which they are members. Person-family statistics, published here for the first time on the basis of a decennial census, are of special interest to persons dealing with research on family structure, dependency, employment of family members, family income, housing supply, marketing, and family welfare.
Among the aspects of family composition presented are size of family; number of children of the family head; presence of children, grandchildren, parents, and other relatives of the head; presence of subfamilies; and presence and marital status of parents (for children). Some of the tables present data for three types of families; Husband-wife families, other families with male head, and families with female head. Other tables present data for all families or for husband-wife families.
The social characteristics of families by which family members are classified in this report include age and sex of head, Mobility Status of head, and educational attainment of head. Economic characteristics of the family include occupation of head, industry of head and of chief income recipient in the family, income of head, family income, and hours worked by wife of head. Housing characteristics of the household or family include persons per room, year structure was built, condition of unit, access to unit, kitchen equipment and plumbing facilities, presence of several selected durable goods, and presence of automobiles.
The report also includes statistics on the household and family status of all persons, including persons not in families, by age, with cross-classification by sex and marital status for the adult population; these figures include detailed type of group quarters for persons in group quarters. Also shown are statistics on selected characteristics of household heads and of persons who are potential household heads, and statistics on the characteristics of members of households headed by a primary individual.

Complete-count statistics on the number of households, primary families, primary individuals, persons in households by relationship to household head, and persons in group quarters are presented for States, their urban and rural parts, counties, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Urbanized Areas, and urban places of 10,000 or more in chapter B of Volume I, Characteristics of the Population, and for census tracts in the Series PHC(1) reports. Chapter B of Volume I also includes complete-count statistics on the number of households for places of 1,000 to 10,000 and minor civil divisions. For States and the rural-farm population of counties, statistics on the number of households, persons in households by relationship to household head, and persons in group quarters, based on the 25-percent sample, are presented in chapter C of Volume I. Chapter D of Volume I presents 25-percent sample statistics on persons in households by sex, age, and relationship to household head, and persons in group quarters by sex, age, and type of quarters.
Statistics on families and married couples by presence of children and on unrelated individuals, based on the 25-percent sample, are presented for States and their urban and rural parts, counties, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Urbanized Areas, and urban places of 10,000 or more in chapter C of Volume I, and for census tracts in the Series PHC(1) reports. Chapter D of Volume I presents 25-percent sample statistics on families by age of head, number of children, size of family, number of adult members other than head or wife, marital status of head, education and occupation of head, number of members in the labor force, and family income, and statistics on unrelated individuals by age, Marital Status, and income, for States and their urban and rural parts and for Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas of 250,000 or more.
Several of the other reports in Series PC(2) and PC(3) contain additional information on households and families or on the household and family status of the population. Report PC(2)-4A, Families, presents statistics on families by family composition and social, economic, and Housing Characteristics. Report PC(2)-8A, Inmates of Institutions, presents statistics on the characteristics of inmates of institutions, by type of institution. Most other reports in Series PC (2) and PC(3) include some information on household and family status. Statistics on women by number of children ever born are shown by relationship to household head (for women in households) and by type of institution (for female inmates of institutions) in PC(2)-3A, Women by Number of Children Ever Born. Statistics on the characteristics of occupied housing units are presented in reports of the 1960 Census of Housing.

Statistics on the number of households, families, married couples, and unrelated individuals for States, their urban and rural parts, counties, standard metropolitan areas, Urbanized Areas, and urban places of 10,000 or more were presented in Volume II, Characteristics of the Population; data on the same subjects were presented in Volume III, Census Tract Statistics. Volume II also presented statistics by age on married couples and persons by relationship to household head, for States and their urban and rural parts and large standard metropolitan areas, and statistics on families and unrelated individuals by income for States, their urban and rural parts, counties, standard metropolitan areas, Urbanized Areas, and urban places of 2,500 or more.
Volume IV, Special Reports, Part 2, chapter E, Marital Status, presented statistics from the 1950 Census on the family status of the population by Marital Status, age, and income, by color and Farm-Nonfarm Residence.
Volume IV, Special Reports, Part 2, chapter A, General Characteristics of Families, presented statistics from the 1950 Census on families by age of head, number of children, marital status of head, size of family, and age and labor force status of wife for regions, States and their urban and rural parts, and large cities and standard metropolitan areas; and statistics by regions on families by Mobility Status, education, class of worker, occupation, industry, and income of head, and by family income. Additional information on family subjects was presented in other reports in Volume IV.
Volume IV, Special Reports, Part 2, chapter E, Marital Status, presented statistics from the 1950 Census on the family status of the population by Marital Status, age, and income, by color and Farm-Nonfarm Residence.
Volume IV, Special Reports, Part 2, chapter A, General Characteristics of Families, presented statistics from the 1950 Census on families by age of head, number of children, marital status of head, size of family, and age and labor force status of wife for regions, States and their urban and rural parts, and large cities and standard metropolitan areas; and statistics by regions on families by Mobility Status, education, class of worker, occupation, industry, and income of head, and by family income. Additional information on family subjects was presented in other reports in Volume IV.
Statistics on the population in households by relationship to head, color, and sex, for cities of 50,000 or more, and by age for States, urban and rural, and for cities of 100,000 or more, and statistics on the population outside households by age, color, and sex, for States, urban and rural, and for cities of 100,000 or more, were presented in the 1940 Census in Volume IV, Characteristics by age. In addition, there were eight reports from the 1940 Census covering social, economic, and housing characteristics of families for the United States, regions, and States.
Annual estimates of the population by household and family status, by age, and by marital status and age, and estimates of the number of households and families by characteristics, based on the Current Population Survey, are published in Current Population Reports, Series P-20. In addition, Information on persons by the characteristics of their families, similar to the information in some of the tables in this report, was published in Series P-20, No. 112, "family Characteristics of Persons: March 1959.
The data shown in the present report represent the full detail printed out by the computer system. The detail shown for the United States was tabulated separately for each State and was stored on magnetic tape but not printed out. Requests for unpublished data, giving a specific description of the figures desired, may be made by writing to the Chief, Population Division, Bureau of the Census, Washington, D.C., 20233. Inquiries concerning unpublished data should be transmitted to the Bureau as soon as possible because tape files are not maintained indefinitely.
