Demographic Madness: The NCAA Finals   by Sydney Beveridge

Tonight, Butler and Duke face off for the NCAA championship.  The numbers have been crunched.  The brackets have been tallied.  But, off the court, what are these teams about?

Butler’s Bulldogs live in Marion County, Indiana.  According to the 2000 Census, the university town has 5,317 residents, and the school has a student body of 4,415.  In the Butler area, 2,033 people live in the dorms.   (The Census keeps track of people living in group quarters, including military quarters, nursing homes, correctional facilities and college dorms.)

Meanwhile, Duke’s Blue Devils live in Durham, NC, and has a student body of 12,770.  Two census tracts in the university area with college dorm populations report 4,394 students living in group quarters.

Not only is Duke the favorite, but Durham enjoys higher median incomes, house values and educational achievement levels than Marion County.  But, will the underdog Bulldog, triumph?  Census data can’t predict that kind of success just yet.
