Multivariable Maps: Creating New Comparisons and Visualizations

MONDAY, JAN 04, 2016

Did you know that Social Explorer allows you to map multiple variables at once? Open up new opportunities to compare groups directly and visually on a single map. This blog post will guide you through mapping multiple variables in a few easy steps.

Our first map shows the white population in the New York metro area. With a few clicks, we'll add data on the black and Asian populations.

To add other variables, go back to the Change Data menu and pick the other groups you wish to compare by clicking the check boxes. In this example, we've selected the white, black and Asian populations.

You will see check boxes next to the eligible variables–Social Explorer prevents you from selecting unrelated variables for multivariate comparison, such as variables from different surveys (years with different populations) or different categories (for example race and gender) on the same map.

Here is the final map showing all three race groups at once.
