Health Data Now Available on Social Explorer

FRIDAY, APR 01, 2016

County level health data from 2010 to 2015 are now available on our site. Start exploring a variety of health factors including obesity, smoking, excessive drinking, access to healthy foods and medical care.

These data were compiled by the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program. The measures come from a variety of national and state data sources including the Center for Disease Control and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. The County Health Rankings and Roadmaps program standardized and combined the measures using scientifically-informed weights.

Using the data to examine the five counties of New York City, we learn that the Bronx has the highest percentage of residents with limited access to doctors due to costs (17.6 percent), and has the highest percent of adults that report fair or poor health (24.2 percent). By contrast, Staten Island has the lowest percent of people with limited access to a doctor due to costs (10.5 percent) and the lowest percent of adults that report fair or poor health (11.5 percent) of the five boroughs.

Between 2010 and 2015, the obesity rate for adults 20 and over increased for all boroughs except Manhattan, where it decreased slightly from 15.4 percent to 14.7 percent. The Bronx remains the borough with the highest obesity rate (28.0 percent in 2015). Brooklyn had the next highest obesity rate in 2010, but now Staten Island is second (27.7 percent), followed by Queens (27.1 percent) and then Brooklyn (25.3 percent).
