American Eyes on the Canadian Election

TUESDAY, OCT 20, 2015

Following on Canada's national election and controversial Prime Minister race, Social Explorer takes a look at where Canadians live in America.  According to the 2009-13 American Community Survey, there were 811,109 Canadians living in America, and 707,987 people with Canadian ancestry, plus another 2,061,608 French Canadians.

Back in 1920 at the height of immigration to the US, Canadians were the fifth most common immigrant group behind Germany, Italy, Russia and Poland.  Now it is the 11th most common immigrant group (with Mexico, China, India and the Philippines as the top four).

As one might expect, Canadian Americans are concentrated in many northern parts of the US, such as New York State, New England and the Pacific Northwest.  Minnesota's "Little Canada" remains very Canadian, but many neighboring areas have surpassed it.

Browse the maps for more on our neighbors to the north living in America.
