2012 vs. 2016 Election Maps: Closeup on the Midwest

MONDAY, NOV 14, 2016

The 2016 Presidential Election result maps are now available on Social Explorer. These and our other election data maps come from Dave Leip's Atlas of U.S. Presidential Elections.

A closer look at the Midwest election results reveals how different counties voted in 2012 and 2016, as shown in the following pair of maps.

While places like Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago stayed firmly blue both elections, neighboring areas like Racine, Columbia and Kenosha counties changed from Democratic wins in 2012 to Republican wins in 2016. Other nearby counties went from pink to red (signifying a larger Republican margin).

Similar patterns exist in other Midwestern states. For example, Gary, Indiana, remained blue for both elections, but neighboring Porter County flipped from blue to pink, and Newtown County became redder. These types of shifts also occured in parts of Michigan and Ohio.

Zoom in and mouseover different areas to explore the results in more detail.
